Wawakapewin First Nation is a remote community in northern Ontario that can be reached by float plane or winter road, and is home to 37 people living on the reserve. The community drilled new wells and installed a new water plant in 2022, with funding support from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
Wawakapewin has 1 long-term drinking water advisory in place affecting 15 homes:
- a boil water advisory for the Long Dog Public Water System was set in July 2023 and became long-term in July 2024
The advisory was initially put in place due to high turbidity (high amount of organic particles) in the filtration system. The community is working on an action plan to address issues with water treatment and lift the long-term drinking water advisory, including an assessment of the water treatment plant to identify and fix any deficiencies. Once these issues are addressed, the community should be able to lift the advisory.
Operational support is being provided through a Centralized Water and Wastewater Hub delivered by Shibogama Tribal Council and funded by ISC.
