Flexible work schedules
The Government of Canada provides opportunities for you to work as a nurse in a remote or isolated First Nations community. You can create a flexible work schedule that fits your lifestyle, either on a full-time or part-time basis.
Different options are available to you when you create your schedule to meet your needs and the needs of the community. You can:
- work full time and make a home for yourself in one of the communities
- work part time and have a house and a job somewhere else
- work for one month at a time and then take time off

Full-time nurses
Full-time nurses live and work in a particular remote or isolated First Nations community year round and are entitled to 2 paid return trips per year to southern Canada. Relocation to the community is covered by the Government of Canada.
Part-time nurses
There are also part-time opportunities for nurses within remote or isolated First Nations communities, with 2 different options to choose from:
Permanent, part-time employee
As a permanent, part-time employee, you will work in 1 community and commit to working at least half of the year. For example, you could work for 1 month and then take 1 month off.
The resource relief team
As a member of the resource relief team, you are assigned to various communities based on both your work preferences and government requirements. Nurses with the resource relief team usually work around one-third to one-half of the year for a pre-arranged number of weeks or months at a time.
