Urban Aboriginal Strategy Engagement 2016
From Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada
Current Status: Closed
The engagement started on June 20, 2016.
Why
As part of its commitment to improve the Urban Aboriginal Strategy (UAS) in Budget 2016, the Government of Canada is seeking input on how the program can better meet the needs of urban Indigenous peoples. Funding for the current program was extended until March 2017 and the program will continue to operate while this engagement takes place.
Who
The Government of Canada will engage with:
- urban Indigenous peoples, including youth
- recipients of previous UAS funding
- service delivery organizations and partners
- provinces and territories
- national Indigenous organizations that represent First Nations, Inuit and Métis
- National Association of Friendship Centres
- all Canadians interested in urban Indigenous issues
What
The UAS provides project funding for programs that help connect Indigenous peoples in urban centres to services tailored to their particular needs.
This engagement consists of face-to-face regional roundtables in up to 21 urban centres with select stakeholders and partners, as well as an online survey open to all (now closed).
National Indigenous organizations and the National Association of Friendship Centres will also carry out their own parallel engagements and report on the views of their respective members.
As well, all members of parliament and senators have been invited to host town hall meetings in their own communities.
The engagement will:
- gather information on how well the current UAS is working, including best practices
- identify the needs of urban Indigenous peoples as well as barriers
- seek views on gaps in the current program and how to improve urban Indigenous programs
- develop recommendations on what should be the areas of focus for programs and services to urban Indigenous peoples
The information gathered through this engagement will inform the development of policy options for program renewal that better meet the needs of urban Indigenous peoples.

There are five ways to participate:
- Attend a regional roundtable (limited to stakeholders and partners – by invitation only).
- Attend a town hall meeting organized by a member of Parliament or Senator (where available).
- Fill in the online survey (now closed).
- Send a letter to the address in contact information.
