On-Reserve Housing Reform: Engagement 2016-2017
From Indigenous Services Canada
Current status: Closed
The engagement started on May 17, 2016 and closed on March 31, 2017.
Why
The Government of Canada is engaging in a renewed, respectful and inclusive nation-to-nation process, to make progress on issues most important to First Nation communities.
As part of its commitment to improve housing for First Nation communities on reserve and as indicated in Budget 2016, the Government of Canada is engaging with First Nations and other partners to develop an effective long-term approach to support on-reserve housing, and to contribute to a broader National Housing Strategy.
Who
The Government of Canada will engage with:
- national and regional First Nation representative organizations
- First Nation technical groups
- First Nation communities and other interested parties
What
First Nations peoples living on reserve are more likely to experience poor housing conditions and overcrowding than the general population. To address urgent housing needs on reserves, Budget 2016 provides $554.3 million over two years beginning in 2016-17. These housing investments are a first step to improving housing conditions on reserves. This engagement will help develop an effective long-term approach to supporting housing on reserve as part of a broader National Housing Strategy, and is part of a larger dialogue on long-term on-reserve infrastructure investments and program reform.
This engagement includes in-person national and regional meetings to discuss the long-term implementation of on-reserve housing investments and reform options.
