Band Council Resolution for the First Nations Elections Act

WHEREAS, by order of the Minister in accordance with subsection 74(1) of the Indian Act, the Ataro First Nation elects its chief and councillors by elections held under the Indian Act;

WHEREAS, the Council of the Ataro First Nation undertook consultation and engagement with community members over the months of April and May 2015 to consider the adoption of the First Nations Elections Act for the selection of the First Nation’s chief and councillors;

WHEREAS, the First Nations Elections Act presents a better electoral option for the Ataro First Nation that will support the governance stability required to build a stronger and healthier community;

THEREFORE, the Council of the Ataro First Nation hereby asks the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, by order, to add the name of Ataro First Nation to the schedule to the First Nations Elections Act. Thereafter, the Chief and Councillors of the Ataro First Nation will be selected by elections held under the First Nations Elections Act.

WHERAS, in accordance with subsection 3(2) of the First Nations Elections Act, the order of the Minister must specify the date of the first election for the First Nation;

AND THEREFORE, the Council of the Ataro First Nation requests that the date of the first election be fixed as Monday, September 14, 2015.**

**This date must be at least five months from the date of the resolution to allow for sufficient time for the First Nation to be added to the schedule and for the 65 day election process.
